Iron Butterly Did Not Play at Woodstock
A Woodstock footnote: Iron Butterfly’s travel snafu. This, their second album (shown) was released in July ’68 – right before Woodstock. IB was booked to play Sunday afternoon, but apparently got stranded at LaGuardia and never got to the fest to play. IB may have made some late and onerous demands (helicopter to and from venue, cash up front, etc.) but Lang could not attend to their needs, having a few other concerns, while tending to a half a million or so concert-goers and 30-plus other acts. Various sources say not playing Woodstock seriously derailed IB's trajectory. Joni Mitchell was also invited to play Woodstock and chose not too. At the advice of her Manager, she opted for the "Monday after" Dick Cavett Show. The entire side two of the album is of course, the record’s title track In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, at just over 17 minutes. It is not the longest-ever studio rock and roll song.
