Rush - Moving Pictures: concert review

I do not own the classic Rush album Moving Pictures.  It is popular again now because Rush is touring this summer on the theme of playing that record in its entirety, start to finish.  I saw them Monday night at Chicago's best outdoor live music venue - Chater One Pavillion at Northerly Island (fka Meigs Field).  The records shown are not Moving Pictures.  I don't own that, but just bid 99 cents for a beat up album.  The show was great.  Playing Moving Pictures right after intermission allowed them the freedom to delve deep into thier catalogue, playing "La Villa Strangiato," "Far Cry" and "Leave that Thing Alone!"  Joshua Klein's review in today's Trib told us that "Presto" and "Faithless" had not been played live before this tour.  And "Marathon" and "Time Stand Still" rarely are.  Two from a forthcoming Rush album were played.  Highlight for me was the 12 min. The Camera Eye - the first song on "side two."  My Rush expert pals (I am just a lowly fan) can explain why they never play Fly by Night or Cinderella Man in concert.  This venue is the best.  If you notice a band you like that is going to play there - go!

  1. I'm going tonight with my 15 year old son, his first concert. Your insights were just the right amount of advance for me. I'm glad they are playing "Time Stand Still" and "Far Cry". The latter is a great song, and I'm so proud that my favorite band in its 900th year of existence still writes great songs! "Cinderella Man" is a specialist kinda song, you are probably its biggest fan, but I don't know why they swore off "Fly By Night" so many, many moons ago!

  2. The second Rush show was rained out due to heavy rains soaking the electronics on stage. Show postponed until later summer.

I am looking forward to their show in Mountain View, California in August.

As far as I can tell, "Cinderella Man" was last played live in 1978 to help support sales of "A Farewell to Kings". It is not a heavily requested song by Rush fans, but a good song nonetheless. I am not sure about "Fly By Night", maybe the band feels it is dated. I think they could do a modern take on the song and squeeze it into the set seeing that it is about three minutes in length.

  3. I totally agree that they ought to bring back Fly By Night. Might be too high for Ged to sing but they can lower the key like they do for 2112. I just saw the band last night and posted a review with almost 30 minutes of video at bit.ly/cVgo5s. Enjoy!
