Doobie Brothers - The Captain and Me

The Doobie Brothers - The Captain and Me.  This might be in my Top Ten all-time album list.  This album has my favorite Doobies song on it - Southcity Midnight Lady.   This one also has Long Train Runnin' - plus monster hit China Grove.   And Without You.  And how about Without You?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Bn_to1uNVg   You can sample many versions of these songs captured during live recordings, but I don't think any one of the live version come close to how great the studio versions are.  A testament to the band and production.  Uber genius Ted Templeman produced this record.  And if you go to the Napa wine country, stop in to the BR Cohn Winery -
http://www.brcohn.com/ - you can see replica gold records in the tasting room.  From wiki, I learned that the album "artwork found on the front and back of the album features the band, including manager Bruce Cohn, dressed in 19th century garments and riding a horse-drawn stagecoach on a freeway overpass.  "All that stuff came from the Warner Bros. film studios lot," Tom Johnston said.  "It must've been a lot of work for the guys who brought up the horse team and the carriage and the clothes.  It was fun to do-they had coffins out there, all kinds of crazy stuff."  The photography was done by Michael and Jill Maggid.  The setting for the cover was located on a part of the Interstate 5 freeway near Sylmar, California that collapsed during the 1971 San Fernando earthquake.  This same section of freeway would collapse again during the 1994 Northridge earthquake.  Try also Eyes of Silver, here - from Vices:

  1. This album got me into ALBUMS! Prior to this I only knew songs. One day I went down to my older bro's teen cave with a water bed. I pulled out this album and put it on his stereo and cranked it! The first four songs consecutively blew me away and I realized from that moment on, I was an ALBUM MAN! Next I played Jethro Tull's "Thick as a Brick" and that only cemented it further!
