The Who: Face Dances

In the book I just read - I found out that the 16 portraits show in grid fashion above where done by 16 different artists.   Out in March 1981, it was produced by American Bill Szymczyk - which to me was a mis-match.  Bill was well known for making Eagles and J. Geils Band records - so working with The Who was a too far of a stretch.   Glyn Johns, to me, is their best fit.   But back to this record cover:  The album cover features paintings of the members by many British painters, who were commissioned by Peter Blake, designer of the cover of The BeatlesSgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album.  Artists include Tom PhillipsRichard HamiltonAllen JonesDavid HockneyClive BarkerR. B. KitajHoward HodgkinPatrick Caulfield, and Blake himself.  Francis Bacon was one notable refusal of the invitation.  Back sleeve photography and reference for the portraits by Gavin Cochrane (except the first and last Pete paintings by Brian Aris).   Click here for a more in-depth listing of the 16 head shots and who painted them:  http://www.thewho.net/linernotes/FaceDances.htm
