Head East - college soundtrack record
I think many people my age will recall hearing this record for the first time, likely in a dorm room or at a party and wondering to themselves, "hey - this is great stuff, but how come I never knew about this band before? Well - that's exactly what college was for. Finding the soundtrack for those great memories. I do not think there exists any live footage of Head East - at least not on youtube. With the weekend's festivitiese - I thought this was the right choice. Can't wait to see everyone. And if you can't be at MacFest - we will miss you...

UK: Where They a Super Group? I'd say "Yes"
UK was, in a way, sort of a precursor to Asia. As Asia was assembled from parts of Yes, King Crimson, Roxy Music, and ELP. So to answer the posted question - I do think UK is/was a super group, for a short time. From the '70's, singer and bassist John Wetton and drummer Bill Bruford were in King Crimson. Keyboardist Rick Wakeman knew Bill Bruford from Yes. [Bruford played on the classic double-live live Genesis album (to be posted later this summer), Seconds Out.] The story goes, Bruford and Wetton each invited a musician. Wetton brought in keyboardist/violinist Eddie Jobson, (think Roxy Music) and Bruford invited Allan Holdsworth (Soft Machine). And voila - a super-type group was borne. With featrued violin and synth - this record has a vide that is a cross between Yes and Jean Luc Ponty.

Connie Francis - tune in to hear Radio Dave's Liner Notes on WSLR - 96.5 FM, Sarasota
I bought this record at a garage sale on Saturday. I got a late start - but I finally hit a sale at noon that was loaded. I would not have bought this record, except for the fact that my good pal Radio Dave is featuring Connie Francis this week on Wednesday, May 19th on his radio program called Liner Notes, heard on WSLR - 96.5 FM, Sarasota. And on-line at http://wslr.org/ Tune in on Wednesdays to hear Radio Dave's "groove yard" radio show for rock and roll rarities you won't hear anywhere else. Dave's live radio show dates back to his Sunday night Soundscope broadcasts in the late 1960s over WXYZ-FM (later WRIF-FM) in Detroit and the mid-1980s series, Rare & Scratchy Rock 'N Roll, that was syndicated on more than 130 radio stations coast-to-coast. Dave is featuring Connie Francis, part II, this week.

One Ton of Mayo - or words to that effect: The Sandpipers
As we found out down in Baja California Sur a couple years ago - this "Mexican" folk song is actualy Cuban.
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of recorded versions of this song. And, the way The Sandpipers do it - is not one of the good ones. To stilted and slow. It has to be the all-time most requested song in all of mariachi band genre. It means - the girl from Guantanemo. The music for the song is attributed (wiki) to Joseíto Fernández, who wrote it at various dates (circa 1929) and who used it regularly in one of his radio programs. The lyrics portray a particular woman from Guantánamo, with whom he had a romantic relationship, and who - if the lyrics are accurate, eventually left him. I do love this song - in all its versions, but most especially played live, table-side, by request, with cold beers and limes.

Garage Sale Report: hit or miss: Chess and Sun
There were tons of garage sales in my neighbor-
hood yesterday. Problem was, I could not get to them at a decent (9-10am) time. Based on another commitment, I could only get to a few, and at the late-ish time of 12 noon. The first sale I hit was a huge disappointment. The lady said "all the vinyl went early." Argh. The next one was good - two large boxes of LP's. A few years ago - I would have made an offer for the whole lot. It had too many opera and show tune records for my taste, but I picked out about 25 LP's. A sale across the street had only 45's and I bought the whole stack. In it were my first-ever Sun and Chess records. I feel like a true collector now that I have those two. Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry, respectively.
